Editorial of magazine MWSP26

In the same week, I met two multihull enthusiasts who are about to embark single-handedly on a great adventure – the kind that will always inspire us to dream.
These are the two challenges I have chosen to share with you in this 5th Special Issue Forever Green.

The first is Nicolas Marcillaud, the younger of the two (he is 31). Aboard a small trimaran built almost 30 years ago, he plans to set off next year on an Arctic circumnavigation. During the refit of his Paradox, the skipper gave priority to second-hand equipment, both for cost reasons and environmental considerations. His goal is to sail around the North Pole; in that case, why burden himself with an engine?

Eric Pilato, meanwhile, is exactly twice Nicolas’s age. Having recently qualified as a professional skipper, he now operates his Excess 11 commercially. Then an idea struck him: what if he created his own Route du Rhum? Setting off from La Rochelle, France, his challenge is to sail non-stop to Pointe-à-Pitre in the Caribbean and arrive at roughly the same time as the “real” competitors in the Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe. Why not?

What these two adventures have in common is that they are both accessible and environmentally responsible. To me, they perfectly illustrate that green boating is not a punishment or a constraint. On the contrary, it offers an opportunity to reconnect with the very essence of sailing, to (re)discover the pleasure of unhurried cruising and ocean passages, and even to combine sailing and motoring in a more thoughtful way, just as we did in the inaugural Forever Green Buyer’s Guide, featured in this issue.
