A question of preparation

We all dream about it… Leaving for a year, or for ten years! But when all is said and done, is this really accessible to the ‘average sailor’? Is it conceivable that you take your loved ones – even more so your young children – on such an adventure? How do you prepare reasonably and seriously so that everything goes well?
With good preparation, even an old boat can take you to the other side of the world…and bring you back again!
With a good, well-equipped boat, you can leave and have some extraordinary encounters, such as here, with a visit from the dolphins…
With a deck plan organized for all the members of the crew, everyone can take part in the maneuvers and enjoy the voyage to the full.
Climbing the mast is part of the regular obligations, especially before crossing an ocean. So provide an easy way of climbing to inspect your rig…
In preparation, independence plays a major role. From an electrical point of view, this will require a lot of work before leaving, to optimize your system.
Preparation will also allow you to get to know your boat well, and thus be capable of carrying out repairs, while being totally independent (notably for the engines!).
With good preparation, your catamaran can take you to the lagoons on the other side of the world, or...to the foot of the glaciers!
Never forget that good preparation is that which allows you to sail…and enjoy your anchorages! It’s up to you to find the right balance.
